Chinese New Year bake sale!
One of my favorite memories with her was making Chinese New Year goodies for sale as all of us have never tried it before. Even though we made minor mistakes along the way, she was ever so patient and encouraging towards us.
Our conversations with her were never dull, and seeing her smiles whenever we visited or talked to her genuinely made our day much more vibrant. She always greeted us with her warm smiles and friendly demeanour. She was very forthcoming with sharing her personal life stories, regardless of whether they were happy or sad memories, and always maintained a very open atmosphere for sharing. Though we weren’t always able to provide solutions to her frustrations, being her listening ear was comforting and reassuring.
With the onset of the COVID-19 situation, it became difficult for us to meet face-to-face. We had no choice but to hear her share about her life over the phone. Every home visit and call ended off with her heartfelt thanks and gratitude towards us, and it was truly a heart-warming experience. Participating has taught me about the value of perspective and her positive attitude left an indelible impression on me.
Despite knowing that her time was limited, she refused to let life slip away from her. She continued doing the things she loved, didn’t let her condition restrict her movements and maintained a positive outlook on life. Perspective is everything, and that is up to us to control.
